Banquet Treasured!

Those were the days when feeding myself with Hindi in the morning and Telugu in the evening was a practice. Waiting for the songs from ‘Sadma’ in radio Ceylon’s ‘aap hi ke geet’ is still cherished. There were many unfavorable mornings and evenings. But on a favorable evening in the same year, I could treasure this Eternal Gift in my little mind.
Savor the feast!

Health booster!

His songs are instant health boosters. No matter how much tired you are, listening to one song can make you energetic. As for me he is the only classicist who composes as per the structure of a particular language. You feel so happy when the pallavi starts, the interludes and the charanams will surely surprise you. Enjoy the ride!

Blessed Ears!

Treating the ear drums with these drops of nectar was a practice that was followed regularly by me. Tasting His music for the first time made me feel that if the music I tasted all these years is sweet like sugar, then His music is sweeter like honey. After tasting some more, honey became nectar. Over the years I started comparing it to oasis in a desert, rain in hot summer, gold and diamond mines, Everest and Himalayas, seas and oceans, kamadhenu and kalpatharu, oxygen in air etc, until the day I realized it is beyond comparison.
After a time, ears were greeted with many flavorless flavors in the name of music which started bursting like bubbles touching the brawny barricades. I started considering my ears as supremely favored.
One more drop for you to taste...

Showers of praise

Our country has given birth to a number of talented music directors who make us proud. It is hard to say who is great and who is not as every one of them has equally enthralled the audience. All the music directors command equal amount of love and respect from the listeners. At one time the listeners were followers of all the composers .There was no comparison among these greats. When dipping the senses in the streams of honey became a routine, the ears naturally turned out to be fully grown with good sense of music. Who knew that some of these mellowed ears were destined to dip their senses in the ocean of nectar? What could be the level of mellowness of these ears? Definitely beyond belief, isn’t it? The senses which tasted both honey and nectar fall into one class. The era that followed, being flooded with nectar, was definitely privileged. The senses that belong to this era fall into another class. Then there was barge in of Pepsis and Colas to muddle up the senses of present era that entirely fall into a different class, for which transitory joy is adequate, feeling comfortable with Pepsi Colas and sometimes trying to taste the nectar with out having the aptitude and without knowing its worth.
Senses that got used to honey and nectar can only taste Pepsi colas, but may not relish because they very well know its worth. Honey showered praises on Nectar and Nectar paid tributes to Honey, but Pepsi Cola acquired more popularity by advertising and exhibiting self appreciation.

Here is a Drop from the Ocean of Nectar!

My Collection

Summer break for me was the time to hunt for the tunes that were saved in my minds memory and to make hard copies, as it was the only time when we were brought to our native land. I was going on banking the priceless charms while my mates were busy gathering pebbles. At times I used to present them one or more from my stockpile. They would merrily listen and relish while I would proudly assert the ‘Name’ of the creator ensuring it is preserved in their minds enduringly.

The Night Of Elucidation

My First Raaja Song.

My mind suddenly sent signals to my hand which was tuning my small radio, my best friend ever, to hold a station which was playing something that was treating my ears with an inconceivable pleasure. After a few seconds, my soul registered The Name 'Ilaiyaraaja' when a voice from All India radio announced the music director’s name who fashioned the song that my mind has just recorded. The voice that proclaimed the name echoed from the cosmos. There was sudden stillness in the air that delimited me. At once I thanked my best friend for giving me a fabulous present, and retired to the bed humming only the last two lines , ‘peru cheppana nee roopu cheppana’ that I could listen to. Since I was in a place that received the south Indian radio channels only during night time, the nights that followed, witnessed me and my best friend searching for the ‘Name’ and yearning for the songs that followed or preceeded the ‘Name’.
Our search delivered fine results and I was victoriously hoarding His tunes in my mind.

Language not a barrier

Music aids to build up interest in a language. Raaja’s music makes us realize the sweetness and richness of the languages that He has touched and generates interest in learning these languages. Through His music it is proven that language is not a barrier for music. My first Tamil song....

I was knowing only one word in Tamil when i first heard this song. It is 'Thanni which means 'Water'. By listening to Ilaiyaraaja's Tamil songs, slowly i learnt that Tamil is 'Amudh' which means nectar.

Mallepuvvu(Jasmine)

Mallepuvvu has left us in a state of jubilation. Even though this flower is my favourite flower as it would be for many, never in my life the word ‘Mallepuvvu’ sounded as beautiful and special as it sounds now, after listening to the stunning composition of the Genius. The words sound exquisite when they get together in the Ace’s tunes, and the Singers turn into Nightingales when they croon his tunes in a regimented way. What else do we need to feel sanctified?

Sense of Divinity!

According to me, when a person believes in the theory of God, for him, God is someone who plays a very important role in his life, God is someone who gives him the spur to live on this earth, He is some one who dwells in his thoughts most of the time, He is someone whom he trusts more than anything else in this world and He is someone whom he loves more than his life. I believe in the concept of many people, many Gods. Each and every one of us has a GOD (General Official Deity). We begin our day and end our night with ‘RAJA’s name. What name can be given to some one who is the Manifest Divinity for us? Our scruples will not allow us to think about him in any other form.

Another treat!

Great Song from the same movie. Enjoy!

Janaranjani

Where there is Simplicity there is Godliness. Simplicity is one of the fortunes of our country. However, we have started spending it to gain fame and popularity and are trying hard to prettify ourselves with fake modesty. Can’t we be famous yet simple? Alternatively, Can’t we be simple yet famous? This is a big doubt for me.

pure melody!

Great work by the Great composer of the century. What an arrangement of instruments! This tune definitely is energising for our minds. Experience healthy music!

sounds(s) of music!

In the recent years there have been concerns about some types of music having negative effects on people’s minds and moods. Famous classical Greek philosopher Plato, who recognized the importance of Music 2000 years ago, writes, “Through foolishness they deceived themselves into thinking that there was no right or wrong in music -- that it was to be judged good or bad by the pleasure it gave. By their work and their theories they infected the masses with the presumption to think themselves adequate judges ... As it was, the criterion was not music, but a reputation for promiscuous cleverness and a spirit of law-breaking." He adds, "The introduction of a new kind of music must be shunned as imperiling the whole State: since styles of music are never disturbed without affecting the most important political institutions."

One thing that music does that cannot be ignored is it stimulates the brain, sometimes positively and sometimes negatively. The frequencies of sounds present in certain instruments and works by certain composers have to be identified for our children. Exposing them to healthy music from childhood would help them in becoming musically matured and shun that which is not good for them. By good music a child gets accustomed to feel the right emotions. Music has thus the power to form the character of a person.
It is time for us to relish the treasure with which we were raised up, and gift our children some of those priceless gems. Being non musical is always better than being musically ignorant and falling prey to the spoilt versions of old melodies and remixes.

Mass to Class

Significance of lyrics in Ilaiyaraaja’s songs remained trivial to me most of the times.
In the early 80’s, Telugu film world witnessed a set of producers and directors gushing in to exhibit the richness of the language, but ended up thrashing the language itself. The outcome was a flow of vulgar songs in to the Telugu cine music world and the division of the audience into two groups namely the class and the mass. The funny side is, these people were assuming that they were fulfilling the requirements of the public. This was a kind of inducement and some of the music lovers too fell prey to this.
With His thunderous entry, Raaja proved to be the liberator. His music freed the listeners from the clutches of coarse music. Songs transformed from rudeness to naughtiness by wearing a veil called Raaja’s Great music. Thanks to some directors who took efforts to nurse the wounds caused to the language by presenting its strength in a decent way. Gradually Raaja satisfied the hunger of both the groups.
Listen to this song that presents the extraordinary usage of various instruments by Raaja.

What a Melody!

The hero in the song is in search of his heroine and the tune is so apt! Maestro is the only Music Director who could give music that suits perfectly to the situation.

Choice of Music

Listening to good music is meditation. It is food for a music lover's soul. When we are conscious about our health and wish to eat healthy food only, we can also make it a point to listen to healthy music only. When so much care is taken for the body, imagine how much care should be taken for the soul?
I would define healthy music as one that cleanses your soul, mind and body and removes the toxins from you. Listening to a good musical piece rejuvenates your body and acts like an antioxidant. It flows like a river and makes you feel like a floating flower on it. A dish is delicious to the mouth only when the preparation is good, a song is delicious to the ears only if the composition is good. When harmony is not maintained music turns bad. Avoiding food which is not good for us or which is not tasty is very easy. We can just refuse to have. However, it is not easy to avoid listening to bad music. We can stop listening to it when we are at home, but it becomes difficult when we are out side. Knowingly or unknowingly many people are falling prey to this. Our body is getting polluted with the pollution in the air and our mind is getting polluted with this noise (music).
Just as God's creation is natural a Musician's creation should also be natural, only then it becomes Divine. Divinity is mentioned here because i am talking about the relation between the Soul and Music. Hence i feel that every music lover should be as wise in choosing the music as he/she is in choosing his /her food .

Thirst quencher!

Excellent composition! Listen and Enjoy!

Soul Sanitizing Song!

Real Music for Real Music Lovers who are spectators to the transforming definition of good music.
This piece of music, with mind-blowing prelude and soul soothing interludes, stirs the senses. The lyrics gel excellently with the tune. Who else other than Maestro Ilaiyaraaja could have created such a melody?
